73rd Victory 5 Mile Race 1.12.2019

by Brett Rumfitt

The conditions were good although the course was altered to squeeze 5 miles in an even smaller area of Lakeside than previously. This was because of the building works that were not advised to the organisers City of Portsmouth AC (nor Rob Piggott for his St. Andrew's races nor the Lakeside parkrun nor Great Run Local). The Strava map looks like a complicated electrical circuit. Communication, as often in working life, is poor! The HQ was the Atrium at Lakeside with additional changing facilities at the Blue Lagoon, Hilsea Lido.

This is a top class 5 mile event attended by all the local clubs because it is in the HRRL (Hampshire Road Race League). Please do not be put off entering though as plenty finished in around and more than an hour and many over 70s and so-called 'Unattached' runners (not UKA affiliated) like us entered. Anyway Baffins Fit Club had only 4 representatives due to other races being close by.  These were Michael Rae in his Portsmouth Joggers vest, Phoebe Carlile in her City of Portsmouth AC vest, Kevin Aylward and myself (in our Baffins Green of course!)

The full results from CoPAC are below but ours were Mike Rae 296th in 35:25 (10th of 38 in M60-64), Phoebe Carlile 453rd in 40:48, Kev Aylward 521st in 42:16 and myself 217th in 33:57 (5th of 38 in  M60-64).

Emma Jolley was 89th in 29:44.

Kev and I adjourned to Subway where they give a discount with your parkrun barcode I hear. The queue is much smaller than the Starbucks too! Afterward ther were presentations of awards for all age categories.

Hopefully, next year they will be able to start and finish at the Mountbatten Centre track and go along the new coastal path at Tipner Lake.
