parkrun Review Saturday 18th January 2020

A total of 294 runners took part at Portsmouth Lakeside parkrun event #193, still on the restricted course and they put out a plea for people to go to other parkruns. This was not helped by Fareham cancelling so many of their's went to Lakeside! Our Alanna Burchett and John Burchett ran their first events there.

A total of 44 runners took part at Bevendean Down parkrun event #207. This hilly grassy course just east of the Lewes Road east of Brighton is usually attended by only a few even though parkrun numbers have rocketed. Louise Griffin ran well and was 1st lady finisher. You would have thought that it's close proximity to both Brighton and Sussex University Campuses would mean many students would attend, but, then 9:00 am on a Saturday morning? Does it exist for may students? Kev Budd is our only other runner here.

Volunteers included Alice Bird and Joanna Gardner. The main highlight for me was seeing Katherine Newell NOT volunteering for a change this week. She actually ran for the first time since May 2017 and I and everyone else hopes that she can run again. Olivia Scammell ran her 50th parkrun. Jackie Jacqueline Ladd ran a 0:05 PB, Rebecca Niles a superb PB by 1:09 in her 159 parkrun and Jamie Payne made his debut. David Sharp also PB'd by 0:18. Former member Dan Slayford ran a 0:30 PB in 3rd place in a run he wasn't happy with! Still more to come then Dan. All in all some good times in good conditions.

In the Age-Graded times, Fiona Shaw was 22nd, I was 14th and Michael Rae 25th. There were also rare appearances by Terrie Ann Brown and Steven Parker.

Barbara Hathaway ran at Beeston, Nottingham in 51:13 in a record 630 attendance.

The parkruns are getting very crowded and I can understand people being frustrated at a slow start but please don't get too far forward or you can be knocked into by the speedy ones. Also at the end the finishing funnel was actually extending onto the course. I know they will address this issue and the timers were trying to record times as accurately as possible.I have read on a couple of facebook pages of runners actually barging each other out of the way at some runs and the perpetrators having their times scrubbed out.

We need more parkruns and soon we will have another one at least locally but remember as Kev Budd says wisely 'It's not the Olympics'. If anyone who runs about 27-32 minutes wants a proper PB with no wait at either end, please see City of Portsmouth's Lakeside 5 Series on normally the last Wednesday of the month April to August. A field of speedy 100-120 so no crowding.
