parkrun Review from Saturday 15th February 2020

Well after last week's globetrotting including Japan and New Zealand, we were back to the bare bones this week. This was in part due to Storm Dennis and the massive amount of rainfall we have endured in the past few weeks. Many parkruns were cancelled including Havant and QE, Chichester, Brockenhurst, IOW, Winchester, Southampton, Eastleigh, Littlehampton, Whiteley and Hogmoor Inclosure.

. However Lakeside and Southsea (where our own inimitable Kev Baffins was RD) managed to get their events run.

Firstly at Lakeside, where a few of us had been on a long run on only 2 days before, noticing that the lake was overflowing onto the path in places. Four of our Baffineers ran through the puddles and mud

A total of 355 runners took part at Portsmouth Lakeside (restricted course still) parkrun event #197

At Southsea, the winds were stronger than the previous week, but I have known worse. Kev Baffins and a few others were down there early at 8:00 to check the course and Mick Michael Conway told us he'd walked the entire course from Eastney and although there was some shingle on the prom, it was OK. Kevin Friery had already posted the previous evening to advise that low tide was at 9:30 so there was no danger of the sea coming over the wall. Run Britain rated it a difficulty of 3.6 whereas last week's was graded at 2.2. Thankfully, the rain held off until later in the morning. A smaller than usual total of 342 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #335

Despite the conditions, Chris King and Ricky Smith were within 30 seconds of their PBs and Louise Griffin, Julie Allan Fuller and Fiona Shaw were in the top 10 ladies and Rich Harris Roty ran his best here for over a year.

In the Age-Graded times, Julie Allan Fuller was 19th out of 342, Louise Griffin 14th, Michael Rae 7th, Fiona Shaw 3rd (despite her bike fall resulting in a nasty-looking bruised knee) and I was 2nd, so Baffins continue to do well in this category.

Volunteers enduring the blustery conditions included Kev Baffins, Kevin Aylward, Katherine Newell, Kate English, Helen Mayhead, Janet Sampson, Martyn Threader, Nikki Tout and(sorting tokens in the warmth and comfort of the Deep Blue on the Pier) Rebecca Niles and myself.

Incidentally, quite a few go to the Pier after if you fancy a sociable tea, coffee or breakfast, inevitably talking about all things running.

If you have not got Baffins as your parkrun registered club and you wish to do this, just go to your results email, select profile and look for us on the drop-down list. Conversely, if you are no longer a club member, you can remove us the same way.
