- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun Review for Christmas Day 2021.

by Brett Rumfitt

A special New Year's Eve treat for you: The Christmas Day parkrun review

A total of 118 runners took part at Northallerton parkrun event #264. This is Helen Mayhead 's home town in North Yorkshire and 6th run here. She ran a course PB by 16 seconds from here previous best which was 5 1/2 years ago!! Helen was also 6th female finisher which is no mean feat.

The course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths, gravel paths and grass. The course is three laps which use the playing fields behind Hambleton Leisure Centre and two footbridges over Brompton Beck. Starting and finishing behind the leisure centre, the course is approximately 900m on tarmac footpath, 1300m on gravel track and 2800m on grass. The course is almost flat with only two small banks (one up / one down), and there are a few narrow sections to navigate which are well signed.

A total of 212 runners took part at Newark parkrun event #376

Becci Knowles made her debut here in a good time and is our 1st runner her on a course run on a mixture of tarmac paths, bark paths and grass.

The course starts with a 250m initial straight before turning right and beginning 3 anticlockwise laps of a loop, the loop consists of a variety of terrains. The run starts on the Tarmac paths leading down to the nature reserve area which consists of a soft bark path. The barked path then leads up some steps and onto the grassed football pitches. The runners will then follow the grass leading back onto the tarmac path to the start of the loop. After finishing the 3 laps you then follow the initial straight back to finish.

A flat course starts on the Torbay Velopark Cycle Track located next to the Torbay Leisure car park and heads anti-clockwise for two laps before exiting the track through two gates on to a gravel path leading on to Clennon Field for a one lap passing Clennon Lake around the football pitches and Astroturf pitch, finishing by the Velopark gates.

Sorry No Dogs allowed at Torbay Velopark parkrun.

Rebecca Niles ran a 2 sec course PB here, her 2nd in 2 weeks and 3rd here since September. This is her 2nd fastest ever behind Teignmouth on 11th December.

The course begins at Beckenham Place Mansion, readily accessible from several directions. It is run on a mixture of gravel and tarmac paths and grass taking in open fields and woodland areas. A few sections of the course are stony and uneven.

Ian Briscoe was a first timer here, nearto his home town in what looks like a good time on that course.

A total of 389 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #361

The occasion was notable for the last appearance of the inimitable Kev Budd as Run Director before devoting more time to getting the much-delayed Great Salterns parkrun up and running. 'It's not the Olympics', 'Don't kick people's dogs', Don't shout at other runners' and 'Don't push pedestrians' are some of his wise phrases which we all remember.

England runner Alex Teuten again graced us with his presence for a seasonal run like last year but not quite in 14:42 like the New Year's Day run in 2020.

Louise Griffin was 9th female finisher, Alex Gannon ran a 5 sec course PB and his 4th best at any parkrun. Another of my Monday Buzzards or sometime Joyriders, Ian Saynor incredibly made his debut in a great time. Lisa Cross (Steve Cross) ran a 12 sec course PB beating her time from 3 years ago. Lisa has only ran faster twice, at Lakeside.

It was good to see Eric De Greef back too.

I was 5th best age-grade, still chasing that elusive 80% but my 2nd best since lockdown ended.

The volunteers included Billy Jules Bilton, Katherine Newell of course, James Yorke and RD Kev Budd

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone.

Please consider volunteering especially if injured or racing the next day. We will need regular marshals etc for Great Salterns. It is not just a BFC parkrun but many will see it as such and we want it to be a success.
