- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun review 12th February 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

We shall begin at the newest local event, Great Salterns, that many Baffins members were involved in setting up, and even more are helping out now. By the way we always need volunteers so please ask as early as possible so that there is no last minute pressure to get marshals etc at the end of the week Full instructions are given, don't worry. It was my first go at Run Director jointly with Jason Smith (he did most and I grabbed the pre-run speech mainly!)

A total of 153 runners took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #4

A massive 27 ran PBs here but it does prove that many are returning for another run. Our PBs were Jim Thompson 1:25, Fiona Cfb 2:05, Denise Courtney 0:29, Julie Allan Fuller 2:56 and John Bucketsofrain 0:34. Julie was 8th lady and many of our other girls were just outside the top 10. Denmead's Julian Manning returned and won in just over his time of event no.1. The top female finisher was a new record. John Bucketsofrain was 9th best age-grade and special mention to the M85-89 man Peter Adams who ran 34:24. I bet we all wish we coiuld just still run at that age!

The course, by the River Fraser, is a mixture of tarmac and gravel paths in Richmond, British Columbia.

Ian Saynor was 9th finisher (interupting his skiing holiday). Our 1st on this course. He's only started parkruns since Christmas 2021 and this was his 3rd fasted of 5.

A total of 268 runners took part at Portsmouth Lakeside parkrun event #229. Numbers have been increasing lately despite Great Salterns starting. It may be the New Year effect combined with the fact that they have filled in the potholes on the path behind the lake. Great Salterns' first winner won agan here. Despite the official results, I can confirm Alison Newman ran a 25 sec PB here. I'll let her explain!

A total of 426 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #368. Despite Baffins runners not venturing to the windy coast so much (many are helping and supporting the new parkrun at GS) we still have the most runners ever here. I shall be back there this coming weekend as meeting some friends we've not seen for 12 years who are staying down there.

In December the 2 Portsea Island runs attracted 478, 499, 546, and 569 runners. Since then the 3 including GS have attracted 873,866 ,821 and 847. The New Year always boosts attendances but it looks like GS will settle around 150-200 and not affect numbers elsewhere much.

As always a huge thanks to the volunteers before, during and after the events. Please contact the individual parkrun if you can help, especially if injured, resting or racing the next day. Apparently there are free teas and coffees at GS from the Cricket Hut?

There results will be on our website, where you can pay your memberships at £11 a year, 19p a week!!!
