- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun review 26th March 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

A total of 113 runners took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #10 where I was Run Director (solo) for the 1st time. Firstly thanks to all the volunteers on the day and throughout the preceeding week and especially Paul Wainwright and Jason Smith for their expertise on the day.

There were 64 first timers (partly as Lakeside was off) and 33 PBs so amazingly 97 of the 113 runners ran their best times here on a drying course.

Amongst the PBs were Eric De Greef 1:31 , best anywhere for 6 months & 7th best of 232 parkruns, Kevin Rowsell 0:35, Steve Cross 1:00, John Bucketsofrain 0:38 & 7th best age-grade, Chi SO 0:34, Denise Courtney 1:04, Chris Mathews 1:06, Katie Rowsell 1:48, Jade Southam 0:19.

It was great to have the bulk of the volunteer posts filled up by midweek and again this week looks good, just a few marshals are still needed. Please have a look at the future roster page on our website and email at greatsalterns@parkrun.com if you can help out. Many roles can be combined with running and if you are racing the next day, resting or injured it is a great way to stay involved and see your clubmates.

This Saturday 2nd April at Great Salterns, there is a collection of old and unwanted running gear including shoes, which will go to Burundi in Africa, where most people can't afford to have running shoes. We have donated before and Warren Chebby will be there to collect it. Warren goes out quite often when he can to make sure the kit is delivered safely. Please have a quick look and bring something along. Warren collects all the time so don't worry if you miss this one. Have a word with him on Saturday and he will give you contact details.

This is a great run to do. Starting in Monmouthshire, Wales, on the Wye Bridge Section of the old Severn Bridge, the route is an out and back course over the beautiful Severn Bridge. The run takes you across the national border into England, and into the counties of Gloucestershire and Avon, taking in breathtaking scenery of Wales and England either side of the Severn Estuary, before bringing you back into Wales. I can't see that Andy is a current member, but no there BFC have run there.

A massive 2:41 PB for Helen Mayhead although Ziggy-assisted I would think especially up those hills. We should remember that dogs can be a hindrance too with calls of nature!!

A total of 748 (again 2nd highest behind Bushy) runners took part at Southampton parkrun event #434

It's such a large event that even a very good time by Sonny Locke only gets you outside the top 100. It was Becci Knowles (on her debut) 4th fastest of her 85 parkruns and is our 2nd fastet female behind Louise Griffin (21:35)
