parkrun review 7th May 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

BFC members parkrun review for Saturday 7th May 2022. We begin in Paris.

A total of 78 runners took part at parkrun du Bois de Boulogne, Paris event #255

Olivia Scammell ran for the 1st time here. The starting point is located on the Lac Inférieur ring road, near the old Carrefour des Cascades. The surface is bitumen on almost the entire route, apart from the part located next to the rental of boats "Le Chalet Des Iles" (fitted path), to avoid the Route de la Muette in Neuilly. Certain sections of the course may be muddy, covered in leaves, or present puddles after a rain. Depending on their availability, pointers will be placed at key points on the course and/or signs will be in place to guide you. The starting point is located on the Chemin de Ceinture du Lac Inférieur, on the south-west side (Carrefour des Cascades), between the Cascade du Bois de Boulogne and the Kiosk of the Emperor which is on the island. It consists of 2 laps of the Lac Inférieur, clockwise on the Chemin de Ceinture du Lac Inférieur, with a passage on the border path of the Lake at the level of the Route de la Muette in Neuilly (North-East side).

The width of the paths of the course vary between about 3.5 metres and about fifteen metres. As with all parkruns, care must be taken of other users of the site.

The Griffins have run here before. Out of interest only about half the field look like they have French names and there are a few Polish-sounding names too.

A total of 334 runners took part at Storeys Field parkrun event #39. This is a newish run in Cambridge after the original one (which I have run) was cancelled due to complaints from other park users, who objected to it being used for an hour on a Saturday morning!

Jo Wilkins ran a great time to be 8th female on her debut here. Not many BFC women have run faster at parkruns. It was an APPB (all-parkrun PB) for Jo by 40 seconds!

A total of 77 runners took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #16. For many of us this is our home parkrun now and where many volunteer also. John Bucketsofrain was 9th male and had the 3rd best age-grade.

Some huge PBs were run by Robert Duncan Clayton 1:53, Neil Priddle 4:11 and even Billy Jules Bilton got in on the act as tailwalker (3:58). Chi SO equalled his best here and Rich Harris was not far off his PB also.

Helen Hunt was 5th lady finisher and had the 9th best age-grade.

A total of 404 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #380

Ian Briscoe and Jade Southam were not far off their best runs here. Richard Jones ran a great 0:42 PB ( his 5th in a row and beat his Great Salterns time by 0:12, so an APPB) and was 8th best age-grade. Michael Rae had 2nd best age-grade.

Finally a total of 601 runners took part at Frimley Lodge parkrun event #568. The number was boosted by nearby Rushmoor and Sandhurst parkruns being cancelled due to other events on their locations and also the National Running Show at Farnborough. Jason Smith and I attended this where we saw Sir Mo Farah being interviewed by Jo Pavey and others.

A women we spoke to before and after turned told us she belonged to the club whose member beat Sir Mo the other day in a 10k in London.

The course is two laps. Starting at the middle of the top end of the cricket pitch behind the pavilion (nearest canal), the course goes anti-clockwise heading towards the first football field at the far west side of the park. Going around the perimeter of that field, then turning right onto a path downslope for about 50 metres. Then it's a left turn, following the path east past the pavilion and playground on the left, and continuing along the path to the far corner of the next field. The course then turns left going a slight upslope to the top of the field near a large gate. At the gate turn right across a small grass patch to the miniature railway crossing, then follow the path around to the right at the crossing. Follow the winding path through the wooded area, initially going left following a miniature railway fenceline, until it finally comes to the dog walking field. Follow the path across the dog walking field and through another wooded area with the train line on the right. This path leads to the 'Canal Turn' joining the canal towpath, turn left here and follow the towpath all the way back to the miniature railway area, where there is a sloping path off the towpath to the left. Then continue west along the top of the football field and into the cricket pitch field where the course started. After completing two laps, the course turns left at the top of the cricket field just beyond the original start position, going downslope to the finish area, about three quarters of the way down the field.

We enjoyed the course although when wet the trail parts would be tricky and they didn't warn us in the briefing that we had to run over a miniture railway line!

A result I was told about was Richard Walker running Medina IOW in a very fast 22:47, the fastest ever by anyone in our club and 0:58 better than his previous best at Southsea.. He was 41st finisher of 149 runners and 37th male. Richard, please consider putting Baffins Fit Club on your parkrun profile so I don't miss your runs. Anyone can show you how if you aren't sure.

If you see this post and are not now a member, you can also remove your club from the profile, so you don't get tagged by me by mistake.

As usual I will put this on our website www.baffinsfitclub.co.uk where you can buy kit and renew memberships.
