- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun review for 24th September 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

A total of 556 runners took part at Cardiff parkrun event #692

Eric De Greef made his debut in this large parkrun and is our 3rd fastest after Gordon Scruton and Jane Rodrigues. The course is along The Taff trail, within Bute park and run entirely on tarmac footpaths on an out and back course alongside the River Taff. Unlike Southsea, you need to keep to the right!

Ian Briscoe was just 2 secs from getting a course PB here.

The route, at Crystal Palace Park starts by the cafe near Thicket Road car park and turns right off the central avenue by the playground. The route continues on the gravel path which eventually becomes tarmac. Go up the short hill taking the first left. Continue with the fishing lake on the right hand side, past the concert bowl and take the first left. Follow the course and bear right when available, up a gradual slope. Follow the road with the concert bowl on the right and then the fishing lake on the right. Down the short hill and take a sharp left onto a gravel path. Follow the path keeping straight until approaching the Penge entrance to the park, turn right through the start line. Repeat the same route with the exception of the oval of tarmac near the concert bowl. Go straight instead. On the second lap and after passing through the start line, the finish funnel will be visible up on the left.

I went back to where it all began for me in October 2013. My first run there since April 2022. I thought I might be the only BFC runner but it was good to see a few Baffineers and others I hadn't seen for a while. This included Michael Rae almost catching me at the end! Craig Lunn ran a 3 sec PB, his 3rd fastest at any parkrun. Emma Hawkins ran a 10 sec PB and also her 3rd best at any parkrun.

Again some great runs here, with Richard Walker 5th male just behind his best time, Louise Griffin1st female with Olivia Scammell, Alison Newman and Emily Smith in the top 10.

In the Age-Graded Percentages, Richard Walker was 3rd, Dave Rees-Whelan 5th and Louise Griffin 6th.

Liam John Bradshaw had the most outstanding run though, an All parkrun PB by 37 secs and a GS PB by 50 secs!

Geoff Newman, Emily Smith, Jim Thompson and Alison Newman were near their best times.

Thanks to the volunteers

We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Julie ALLAN, Robert BILTON, Kev BUDD, John BURCHETT, Paul CLIFT, Denise COURTNEY, Kate ENGLISH, Jen LITTLE, Helen MAYHEAD, Alyson ROOK, Hudson ROOK, Jesse ROOK, Janet SAMPSON, Aoife SHOVLIN, Jason SMITH, Nigel SO, Alison SOUTHWELL, Nikki TOUT, Richard WALKER, Jo WILKINS, Nikki Nikki WrightThere are still some volunteer positions available for this week 8th October when I am RD again. Marshals and Scanners are particularly needed, also tailwalkers, parkwalkers. We need at least scanner then others can help after they have finished running (once they've recovered!) Thank you for your help. Despite our relatively low numbers of runners at GS, we have a growing reputation for being an enjoyable, friendly and supportive run. This coming Saturday 8th October is the 250th parkrun for Eric De Greef who has chosen us for this momentous event. Many know him so please wear something ORANGE to show your support for Eric as this is the colour of his home country, The Netherlands.

Why not get involved and volunteer?
