- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun review 12th November 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

We begin in North Hanmpshire where total of 409 runners took part at Basingstoke parkrun event #701

Tracy Strydom has run this 9 times and is our only runner here. The course is in the War Memorial park, Basingstoke and run on a mixture of grass, woodland and tarmac paths.

A total of 396 runners took part at Ashton Court parkrun event #516 Ashton Court parkrun is a simple out and back course (uphill mainly for the first half then down again), starting and finishing on the main service road 250m beyond the Mansion, and following well made paths to a turning point close to the Ashton Court quarry. It is definitely on my to do list as I grew up just north of Bristol and went to school in the city.

The first and last 1.3km is run on a tarmac service road (closed to motor traffic, except authorised park vehicles). The middle 2.4 km is on a wide stone/gravel path, generally well drained although the top of the course is subject to potholes resulting in puddles after heavy rain.

From the start to the turning point there is an ascent of around 100m. This is mostly a steady climb, although two short stretches are quite steep. Please don’t be put off by this, many of us walk up the hill and run down, and we’re more than happy for participants to walk the whole course. There’s no time limit!

On the way back down the effort of going uphill is rewarded with fantastic views over Bristol and the surrounding countryside, and the promise of 2.5km downhill to the finish.

Olivia ran a 4:38 PB helped by the fact she started with everyone else this time??

A total of 156 runners (probably about 50% German) took part at Hasenheide parkrun event #182. This is the only parkrun in Berlin surprisingly. I followed Alex Yorke and Eric De Greef in running this one in one of my best times of the year. The run takes place in Volkspark Hasenheide Berlin, Columbiadamm 160, 10965 Berlin. It is run on a mixture of different surfaces, tarmac and compacted gravel wide paths. Start and finish are at Café Hasenschänke (like many buildings here covered in grafitti and street art), near the fairy tale playground and the natural theatre. The route consists of 2 laps. First it goes 300 m in a westerly direction. At the first fork, go slightly left. Shortly thereafter, turn right onto the main path that goes around the park. After approx. 1.1 km you will pass a mini zoo. In the 2nd loop, after just over 3km, turn right and climb the circular hill for 200m before rejoining the circular route. After about 4.7 km, turn right onto the home stretch. The hill was a nasty little one near the end.

This was my first non-UK parkrun in 342 runs. It was relatively easy to get to on the underground from Alexanderplatz (the big TV mast)

I only beat the 1st female because she stopped twice to tie her laces and couldn't pass me the 2nd time! I was really pleased to get the best Age Grade in the field and now am Baffins' fastest here (at the moment)
