- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

parkrun review New Year's Day 2023 (runs I am aware of)

by Brett Rumfitt

We begin at a very wet Great Salterns. In such conditions and maybe also after some late New Year's Eve celebrations,  unsurprisingly nobody was within a minute of their PB. Some good top 10 male finishes from Alex Gannon and Paul Griffin, and female top 10s from Louise Griffin and Laura Hyman on her debut.

We were joined by some fast runners including some from Denmead Striders including Julian Manning. Also Skeleton Boib medallist Alex Coomber was back along with Emma Jolley who many of us know.

In Southampton, Sonny Locke ran a slower one in 558th place, 345th male in 34:07, Becci Knowles was 253rd, 42nd female in 25:42
At Whitehaven in Cumbria, Gordon Scruton was our 1st runner in 21:35 in a great 2nd place. The course is at Whitehaven Cycle Track, Whitehaven. The course is run entirely on tarmac paths.

At Crawfordsburn Country Park, Bangor NI, the course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths and trail paths. Here Christine McCullough was 2nd female in her 1st run here in a good time of 22:11.

The course is a single lap on a mixture of tarmac and trail paths around the beautiful country park. The start and finish points are close to the Countryside Visitor Centre where the Woodlands Cafe is also located.
The route takes you up and around Skelly Hill before heading along the coastal path at Crawfordsburn beach, it then tracks inland following the Crawfordsburn river upstream to the impressive railway viaduct where it turns into the glen and crosses the river. A steep climb takes you from the foot of the glen to the edge of the wild flower meadow, from there the route crosses Windmill Road into 21 Acre Wood. Once 21 Acre has been traversed a zig-zag downhill trail takes you back to the coastal path. Upon reaching the Crawfordsburn river we again head inland before taking the third and final bridge to cross the river and head back to the coast retracing the outward route along Crawfordsburn beach to the foot of Skelly Hill. This time we don’t climb Skelly Hill with the route staying on the low path along the bottom of the hill to the finish line back near to the visitor centre.

parkrun do not provide a summary for runs that are not on a Saturday so this review and the one from Christmas Day may be missing some runners expoits, sorry, as it is a bit of guesswork as to who has run where!
