Brett's parkrun review for 30th December 2023

A total of 57 runners took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #105

Thanks to the volunteers

We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Julie ALLAN, Stefanie ARNOLD, Robert BILTON, Deborah BRIDGER, John BURCHETT, Denise COURTNEY, Ian GREGORY, Louise GRIFFIN, Neil GRIFFITHS, Gillian HEATH, Thomas JELLIFF, Lynne JOLLEY, Tim LEHOTA, Helen MAYHEAD, Kate MIZON, Edward MORRIS, Neil PRIDDLE, Patricia ROGERS, Brett RUMFITT, Martyn THREADER, Maria TUCKER, Janice WELLSTEAD

Why not get involved and volunteer? On 6th January we just could do with a 1st timer's brief and a post event close down.

On a sticky course, I was 5th and 1st in the Age Grades in a small turout of BFC runners. Many were further south intending to run the Pebbledash at 10:30 after Southsea parkrun.

Jo Parry ran a great 4:56 course PB

Course Description (concrete, compacted gravel & trail)

The course follows a signed and marshalled 5k route through this beautifully scenic site. The start and finish are conveniently located near to the visitor centre and café.

From the start runners head up a short incline, before turning left and following the marked path as it gently twists and turns down a slope. At the bottom runners turn right and follow the path on an anticlockwise loop. The path then meanders through the Bluebell Woods and past the Greenheart Lakes before turning left and weaving uphill and anticlockwise around the perimeter of the Wooded area before turning left and down a short ‘trail’ clearing in the woods. On re-joining the path and turning right runners follow the path as it twists and turns around the meadow and back towards the Bluebell Woods. Runners will then be directed to follow the path on a clockwise loop before turning left and uphill along the winding path before finishing on the grass in front of the Visitor Centre.

A total of 164 runners took part at Barnstaple parkrun event #485

Jason Smith is our 1st runner here in North Devon.

Course Description (mostly tarmac)

This is a two and half lap, easy going, flat course suitable for all abilities. It starts with the half lap around the orange loop (see map) in an anticlockwise direction. Then you begin two big laps which start with a blue loop towards the opposite end of the park still in an anti-clockwise direction and include the orange loop.

Under normal circumstances runners should stay on the tarmac paths. However, please note there may at times be some flooding on the path and we will need to re-direct on the grass.

The course is three clockwise laps of the perimeter of the playing fields, starting on the corner near to the cricket nets and finishing on the path that goes up the middle of the site. It’s largely flat and run on gravel or tarmac paths, including the uphill stretch nicknamed ‘Up Pomphrey’, or should that be 'Play up Pomphrey!'
