For 22nd August, when I am the Run Director, we still need at least someone to hand out the Finish Tokens and maybe 1 more marshal, but the roster is looking good. THERE WILL BE CAKE as I was away for my birthday last week.

Whitley Bay parkrun

Course Description

This is a two lap course containing a few short inclines. The course begins and ends on a large tarmac ‘helipad’ close to the War Memorial/Links bus stops facing the Spanish City Dome and immediately in front of Eastbourne House Care Home.

The course follows the public footpath around the war memorial, and then follows the path closest to the sea along to the skate park. At the approach to the skate park, participants will bear right dropping onto the lower prom, where you head towards the lighthouse. Participants then proceed along the lower prom at the end of the prom they travel up a short incline and continue towards the Briar Dene pub. When participants reach the main road they turn left (directed by a marshal) and continue adjacent to the main road until turning left again. Here they hit the 'double dip' following the path down towards the prom but immediately turning left and up a short, sharp incline. Participants then follow the path along the Links, over the Rendezvous Cafe and back towards the skate park. At the skate park they turn left and take the middle path (marshalled) towards the war memorial. Before getting to the war memorial they take the second path left to rejoin the sea wall path. They then repeat the full lap. On the final lap they pass the skate park and use the path back towards the helipad to complete their parkrun in the funnel on the left hand side.

A total of 655 parkrunners took part.

Ian is our 1st runner here on the coast just north of the Tyne.

Netley Abbey parkrun

A total of 273 parkrunners took part.

Course Description

The course will be mainly flat, fast and on tarmac, compacted gravel paths and grass.

Start at the green pin, follow the gravel path south east past the front of the Chapel.

At the end of the path, follow the path to the left (heading NE), up the hill and then enter Bluebell Wood (shown with the blue pin). Take a left onto the road back to the railway station and then take another left onto the road back towards the Chapel Field.

Follow the service road to the NE of the Chapel Field entering the field via a gap in the fencing.

Follow the NE edge of the field until the second tree after the Chapel and then head west across the field back to the start area.

That's the first lap. Repeat this for laps 2 and 3. At the end of the 3rd lap, rather than head back to the start area, enter the finish funnel (shown with a red pin).

9th place and a 1:59 PB for Graeme Stewarton a course a few of us are heading to on 5th September. He was already our course record holder.

Woolacombe Dunes parkrun

A total of 430 parkrunners took part at one of the hardest, if not THE hardest courses in the UK.

Course Description

One continuous lap on a mixture of stone tracks, sand dunes and beach. This unique parkrun takes in stunning views of Woolacombe bay and beyond. It is an excellent opportunity to run amongst rich and diverse wildlife and habitats. Held on National Trust land within the North Devon AONB.

The route is mostly on sand and includes dune descent, ascent as well as long stretches on what can be sometimes soft sand. Therefore, it may not be suitable for all types of buggy. Please contact the team in advance for further advice on the course.

Our fastest is Gordon Scruton with 25:17

Dudley parkrun

A total of 281 parkrunners took part.

Course Description (not as picturesque as the previous one I'm sure)

The course starts with two laps of the athletics track, after which you will follow the signs and marshal’s out of the stadium and onto the park where you will run through the Green gym equipment and out towards the canal towpath. After following the path running alongside the astro turf football pitch you will continue straight, taking the path up onto the canal.

Once at the top of the path you will be directed right by a Marshall and run along the Stourbridge canal for three quarters of a mile, taking in the industrial factories to the left and right before turning right onto Foots Hole grassland, where you will run for just over 1 mile over varying trail and gravel paths as well running across the old freight railway.

Once through Foots Hole Grassland you will be back on the Stourbridge canal where you will be directed left by a Marshall back onto the left hand track which takes you back alongside the astro Turf and back into the stadium.

The course will finish with two laps of the track, with finishing runners filtered to the right hand side of the track after the final 100m sprint finish!

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.

Due to some narrow gated sections the course may not be suitable for single buggies and we are not able to allow double width buggies - please contact the team in advance for further advice on the course.

Llanfoist Crossing parkrun (nr Abergavenny)

Course Description

Llanfoist Crossing is a primarily out-and-back tarmac course with the addition of a lap of a small grass field halfway around. It starts approx 200 metres up the cycle path from Llanfoist Crossing car park.

Although the course is 80% on tarmac, trail shoes are advised due to the field section - especially in winter/wetter weather. Participants with buggies are advised to email us beforehand to check the suitability of the course as it can get muddy and accumulate a fair amount of leaf litter.

Please note that the surface on the crossing path and field section is uneven in places. Please be vigilant.

A total of 153 parkrunners took part.
