parkrun review for Christmas Eve 2022

A total of 45 (the smallest) runners and walkers took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #49, many wearing festive attire. The course was wet as expected but not so bad in some of the places as we thought, althugh I thought it was tougher than ever.

Main highlights were Louise Griffin as 2nd female and Paul Griffin, Alex Gannon and myself as 3rd, 4th and 6th males respectively. In the Age-Graded percentages, John Bucketsofrain was 1st, I was 2nd, Louise Griffin 4th, Paul Griffin 5th. Alex Gannon and Neil Griffiths weren't that far off their fastest.

A total of 87 runners took part at Alton Water parkrun (don't get excited it's not in Hampshire it's at Alton Water Reservoir, Holbrook Rd, Stutton, Ipswich, IP9 2RY). event #59 where Sam Winton ran a superb 5:41 PB.

The course is a two lap trail route which starts next to the cow enclosure and finishes in a wide open space. The route takes you along scenic footpaths and parts of the stunning reservoir. The course is a trail course with a mixture of grass, gravel, dirt and mud and puddles on occasions. Don’t forget to say ‘hi’ to the Highland cows, geese and ducks around the course.

A total of 79 runners took part at Levengrove (Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, G82 4BG) parkrun event #81 where Gordon became our 1st runner and was 4th placed male finisher. (John Bucketsofrain)

The route consists of three anti-clockwise laps of Levengrove Park, run entirely on tarmac. The course starts and finishes close to the new pavilion. It is an undulating course passing the main attractions of the park as well as running alongside two rivers. There is one sharp downhill section which should be taken with care.

A total of 55 runners took part at Aberbeeg parkrun event #127. Christine Mc was 1st female in a 30 sec PB and her fastest at any parkrun (an APPB), beating her Southsea record from April 2017 by 6 secs!

Flat out and back course on tarmac at Ebbw Valley Cycle Track, Aberbeeg in Wales.

A total of 158 runners took part at the aptly-named Parke parkrun (Bovey Tracey, Devon) event #371. The start and finish area is on the private drive to Parke House. After 90m head off right down the stoney path past the meadow, at the gate head straight across the crossroads and after passing the big wooden shed turn left up the steep hill. Stay on this path until for about one kilometre and turn sharp right near the gate at the far end of the Parke property, follow the lower valley path for one kilometre back towards the cross roads. When you get back to the crossroads turn left which will take you over two bridges over the old mill stream and River Bovey.

On the other side of the second bridge continue straight ahead and take the path up onto the old railway line (Wray Valley Trail). Turn left along the trail for about 500m before taking a right up the hill into the trees. At the top of the hill turn right and follow the path all the way round dropping back onto the old railway before turning left and following it for 200m before turning right back over the bridges to the crossroads. Turn left through the gate and back up the stoney path finish line.

A total of 284 runners took part at Bath Skyline parkrun event #351 The course is at ‘Free Fields’, North Road / Claverton Down Road (opposite Shaft Road)

Jo Wilkins was 5th female finisher and our 1st on this course. This is a multi-terrain course through beautiful woodland and fields which contains a challenging uphill flight of 37 steps.

The course starts and finishes on Claverton Down approximately 700 metres from the end of Quarry Farm Road just off the top of Widcombe Hill. Quarry Farm is a private road and can be accessed on foot only.
