parkrun review Saturday 26th February 2022

by Brett Rumfitt

A total of 368 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #370

I was told the strong wind was southerly so keeping everyone 'left' on the way out. Times were down on usual. Well done to Fiona Shaw (16th best age-graded time) on her fastest since breaking her arm. Michael Rae had the 7th best age-graded time. Katherine Newell was amongst the volunteers.

A total of 249 runners took part at Sixfields Upton (Northampton) parkrun event #129

The course starts with a fast flat straight and then follows a mixed terrain pathway toward the river and follows round through farm gates. The course continues through a working farm and then re-enters the parkland through a narrow gate. The course then loops back toward the start before following out for a second lap. The final lap involves a small extra loop behind a brick building before the finishing straight.

The small field contributed to my finishing my highest for over 7 years and 2nd best gender position ever!

Richard Jones was also in the top 109 with a 6 secs PB. Helen Mayhead was 8th female finisher on her debut run. I couldn't bel;ieve she hadn't run it before as she always seems to be on the course helping. Craig Lunn ran a 9sec PB here and Nick Lay ran his 4th PB in his only 4 parkruns.

Ian Briscoe, myself, Geoffrey( Alison Newman) and Paul Daniel Norris weren't far off their best here. I was very happy as it was my first parkrun since the dreaded virus.

Myself and Richard were 2nd and 8th in the age-graded times, just behing local parkrun ambassador Dave Williams. I was pleased to see an older runner who I got chatting to in the first lockdown when we could only go out alone. He told me he didn't run anymore due to knee problems, but here he was in the 65-69 age group running 24:00, 8 years after his last parkrun. He really enjoyed it too.

Please don't forget to put yourself forward to volunteer as there are many different roles, including some where you can run too. Injuries and forthcoming races can give you the ideal opportunity to give a little back to the parkrun community.

Volunteers at Great Salterns included members Julie Allan Fuller, Kevin Aylward, Liam John Bradshaw,Terrie Ann Brown, Kev Budd, Denise Courtney, Eric De Greef, Jason Forbes, Lee Hammond, Kevin Matthew, Helen Mayhead, Alison Newman, Neil Priddle, Bill Mayhead, Myself, Janet Sampson, Colin Southwell and Debbie Spicer.
