- Bretts Parkrun Roundup

Brett's parkrun review for 9th March 2024

by Brett Rumfitt

A total of 51 runners took part at Great Salterns parkrun event #116

On a slightly drier course, Jo Parry, with a 33 sec course PB and Maria Tucker both were in the top 10 female finishers. Clive Tucker was not that far from his fastest run here.

John Bucketsofrain had the 2nd highest age graded percentage 68.63%

I did not mention last week that Jack Ingleby running 18:32 was the fastest by a BFC member here and his best anywere. Let's hope his minor injury clears up soon.

A total of 415 runners took part at Southsea parkrun event #477

Paul Osborne and Ryan Bendell were near their best on a day when the wind was from the East for a change. The 1st run into it was not too bad as we were more bunched up, but as the field was strung out on the long leg back it was felt, but nowhere as bad as sometimes.

Michael Rae ran his fastest since his return from long term injury. Carrie Richardson Haunstrup was near her best and Libby Osborne was unaware until Monday that she had beaten her PB by 11 secs. It's possible to recveive a text and email for your results, you just need to review your settings on your profile.

I was 5th in the age grades, 79.13% my 9th highest in my 392 runs.

A certain James Baker made a return to parkrun (he is upset about some stats being hidden) but was only 2nd. He has'won' all but 10 of his 369 runs.

Course Description

This is a multi-terrain course through beautiful woodland and fields which contains a challenging uphill flight of 37 steps.

The course starts and finishes on Claverton Down approximately 700 metres from the end of Quarry Farm Road just off the top of Widcombe Hill. Quarry Farm is a private road and can be accessed on foot only.

The 5km course starts with a 400 metre stretch of the field before joining a stone path. From here the path takes you on a 700-metre slight descent towards Freefields and turns right just here around the rugby pitch to start the small loop. The path drops down a stony path which can be slippery when wet to join a balcony path which provides fantastic views across the city. From here the path goes up 37 woodland steps and around a field before rejoining the stone path back down towards Freefields. This time the course splits to the left through Fairy woods to begin the second loop.

This is largely flat and approximately 1km through woodland trails. The course then joins a path up to potato field which can be very muddy where you should observe the course diversion around the edge of the field. From here there is a short path before you re-enter the starting field this time finishing straight down the left-hand side.

Course Description

The course consists of two big loops and one small loop within Upton Country Park (Poole) in the order big - small - big.

To find the start and pre event brief gathering point, follow the path from car park past the tea rooms and through the gate.

Shortly after the start, turn sharp left to start the first anti-clockwise big loop which takes you downhill through woods and left onto a path which meanders through an open meadow. Towards the end of the first loop at the top of an incline you pass the finish funnel and keep straight on, passing the start point again. At the next junction, carry straight on to commence the small anti-clockwise loop. There will be runners in both directions for a short stretch at the start/end of this smaller loop so always stay right. At the top of the hill turn right to start the big loop for a second time. As you near the top of the incline on the second big loop, head left into the finish funnel on the grass.

The course is mildly undulating and offers stunning views over Holes Bay.
